GeneSight® Pharmacogenomic Testing (Genetic Medication Testing)
We offer GeneSight® genetic testing (pharmacogenomic testing / psychotropic medication testing) to help guide psychiatric medication selection and medication management.
GeneSight testing evaluates how your genes may affect:
Medication metabolism
Drug-gene interactions
Response to antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, ADHD medications, and mood stabilizers
Medication side effect risk and tolerability
GeneSight does not identify a single “best medication,” but provides clinically relevant genetic information to support precision psychiatry and individualized treatment planning for mental health conditions including depression, anxiety, ADHD, bipolar disorder, autism-related treatment considerations, OCD, and PTSD.
At-Home Testing Process
GeneSight testing is completed at home. A testing kit is shipped directly to the patient via FedEx. The patient completes a simple, non-invasive cheek swab and returns the kit using prepaid FedEx shipping materials. Results are typically available within a few days and are reviewed with your provider as part of a personalized treatment plan.
MTHFR Gene Variants & Methylation Support
Genetic testing may also provide insight into MTHFR gene variants and methylation pathways, which may influence:
Neurotransmitter production and regulation
Folate and vitamin B12 metabolism
Energy, mood regulation, and cognitive functioning
Response to psychiatric medications and supplementation needs
In some cases, this information may help guide discussion around methylated vs. standard B12 supplementation and broader metabolic and nutritional support as part of an individualized treatment plan.
At ACAP, we use precision psychiatry (personalized mental health care) to move beyond trial-and-error prescribing by combining:
Psychiatric evaluation and diagnosis
Medication history and prior treatment response
Genetic testing (GeneSight pharmacogenomic testing)
MTHFR and methylation-related considerations
Individual symptoms, developmental history, and treatment goals
This approach supports more informed, individualized care for depression, anxiety disorders, ADHD, bipolar disorder, autism spectrum disorder, OCD, PTSD, and related psychiatric conditions.
Who May Benefit from Genetic & Lab Testing
Genetic and lab testing may be helpful for individuals who:
Have experienced side effects from psychiatric medications
Have not responded well to multiple medication trials
Are starting psychiatric medication and want additional genetic guidance
Have a family history of medication sensitivity or treatment resistance
Have complex conditions such as ADHD, autism, bipolar disorder, or treatment-resistant depression
Want a more personalized, precision psychiatry approach to mental health care
Insurance & Cost Information
Medicare and Medicaid patients typically have $0 out-of-pocket cost for GeneSight testing. For commercially insured patients, over 98% pay $330 or less, depending on insurance coverage.
